Bend and Rebound

Art by Patty Piotrowski

Hello Singer of Wellness!

All italicized words from "Bend and Rebound" by Heidi Wilson.

Bend and rebound

This past weekend I went to a vocal workshop in Boston -- it was beautifully coordinated and hosted and facilitated, and gathered fabulous singers. I spent time with family in the area before and after. I've not had such non-stop people contact in... okay, maybe since July.

How are you finding yourself in groups, with people? Me, I find I am still negotiating. I'm more cautious, more tender. I don't know if it's a pandemic effect or getting older... or just hearing my vulnerabilities with more acceptance?

The whole weekend I noticed the constant shift of bend and rebound -- tense, release -- give, pull -- stretch, relax. Sometimes... sweet times I can be right there in the movement from bend to rebound to bend, not frozen in any version of the way it "should be."

Gentle strength of the willow

Heidi's song helps me, partly because singing it embodies the words -- I feel the bend and rebound in my mouth, moving "eh" to "n" to "ah" to "n"; "ah" to "oo" to "n" to "i" to "lll" to "oh" and back to "n"... Those sensations help me focus back in to the present, be with my physical body, willow-kin, able to bend and rebound.

Next week, Heidi and I explore where she finds traction, what are shame devils, which are useful questions to ask? She gets into the nitty-gritty of songleading, and swoops us into her excitement about her big project... including an ask to the community about a cave! She talks about how much more we are when we collaborate... and shares a song of gratitude. I came out of our conversation so thankful to feel connected, lightened by laughter, reflective... this human gift --  an abundance!

A sweet puppy-pile of people at the Advanced Vocal Improv workshop hosted by Paola Faoro of Circlesinging Boston Jamaica Plain and Rosi Amador of Sol y Canto... I'm so grateful to be reminded of what it's like to be a participant -- all the uncertainty and excitement and bend and rebound!

I'm reading our own puppy-pile of names this morning, celebrating each of the 587 subscribers to A Breath of Song. This tending, this listening, this bending, this rebounding -- we are making a difference in our world. Thank you for your voice.

Sing with me in person soon!

$20 pre-register or at the door

CAN YOU IMAGINE what it feels like to bring your questioning heart to these trees to listen in song and community?

I would be deeply excited and honored to host you at this four-day A Breath of Song retreat at the Rowe Center in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts from May 30th-June 2nd, 2024.

Registration is open, and there are only three more spots in the founding fifteen... at which point Rowe opens the event to their mailing list, so I'd love to help "my people" (that would be you!) save your places soon...

Why a gratitude jar?

Because reciprocity counts.
A gratitude jar allows us to receive from you--

and so you give to us who give A Breath of Song to you,
in a beautiful cycle of mutual tending.

Contribute on a one-time or recurring basis:
it's easy, reliable,
and deeply appreciated.

Other ways to give back to us? Of course!

Share, review, comment.
A world jam-packed with people
tuning in to themselves and each other would be
the best reciprocity imaginable.
